How Pilot Systems Work

A pilot hydraulic system is a low-pressure circuit that controls a high-pressure circuit. The operator moves a joystick or pedal connected to a pilot valve. Inside the valve, a plunger meters pilot oil pressure proportional to the lever position — the further the lever is pushed, the higher the pilot pressure. This pilot pressure is routed to one end of the main directional control valve spool, where it pushes the spool in the opposite direction against a centering spring. As the spool moves, it opens flow passages that direct high-pressure pump oil to the cylinder or motor that performs the work.
