When to Replace

Cotter pins are single-use fasteners. The act of straightening the legs to remove the pin work-hardens the metal at the bend point, creating a stress concentration that makes the pin likely to break if straightened and reused. The pin material also work-hardens from the vibration and cyclic loading it experiences in service, reducing its fatigue resistance. Replace the 04050-13022 every time the pin is removed — never straighten and reinsert; when the pin is bent, deformed, or shows surface corrosion; when the head or legs show fatigue cracks; or when the pin diameter has worn from relative movement against the hole.

Installation

1. Confirm 04050-13022 is the correct diameter and length for the hole and retained component
2. Insert the pin fully through the hole until the loop or head seats against the shaft or nut
3. Bend one leg back over the end of the bolt or shaft
4. Bend the other leg along the face of the nut or the opposite direction
5. Trim excess leg length if needed — leave enough to fold over securely
