How Back-Up Rings Work

In any sealed joint, there's a small clearance between the two components — necessary for assembly and operation. When system pressure is applied, it forces the O-ring against the low-pressure side of the groove and into this clearance gap. If the pressure is high enough, the O-ring material extrudes into the gap, causing the seal to fail.

A back-up ring, made of a harder material than the O-ring, sits on the low-pressure side and blocks the extrusion path. It's a simple solution that dramatically increases the pressure capacity of an O-ring seal.
